Thanks to the readers
Thanks to all the players that comment about the column. It is a lot of work but a labor of love. In game comments really get me motivated to keep it up. I see a lot of columns are slowing up. I don't know the reason but I will try not to join them. I try to write one a week at least. If it miss it will because of illness or vacation. I hope it will never be because there was nothing to write about.
This column can lead to some funny situations. I ported in to BDC and a fighter started following me. I have seen leach fighters and at first thought he might be one. But he never got into my battles. He just watched. I was in my power killing mode, kill and mostly no looting. I do this when I want points for something, in this case Item. I had a few one hit nymph kills and piled up a lot of Olthoi corpses.
After about 10 minutes I stopped and said hi. He said he just wanted see the great Fist de Yuma in action. LOL, I told him, not great, just well know. Big difference.
Then there was a time Fist de Yuma (Jr.) was running up the hill next to the Hebren-to Lifestone. "Hey look Fist de Yuma" is broadcasted. Then there was the 35lv that dropped unarmed III gloves on me. How many 10lv fighters get that kind of attention? Not wanting to make my own lamer list I keep it in perspective.
Do I hate Archers?
Many players seem to think I hate archers. While there are many bow-users I would like to see leave the game I don't hate anyone. There are many good archers in the game that are smeared by the bow-users every day.
The lame bow-users fall into two categories. I have no facts to support it but one may be a step to the other.
Step one, leach. A leach never fights if they can avoid it. Anyone they see stand up to a monster they attach themselves to. Mostly this is a fighter but necessarily.
I got a tell from Jocasta the other day. He is an archer of some skill and a fine fighter. Seems he fought an Olthoi right off the bat at BDC and a leach bow-user saw him. From there on Jocata had a shadow. He could not shake him and the leach got into ever one of his battles. Jocasta finally asked me how I got rid of them.
I told him my tricks. The first is to politely ask them to stop. If that does not work then my 305 run will mostly work. As a last resort I just log for a few minutes. Another is to port back to the beginning. I never do this but others will draw a mob and port.
I guess one of my tricks help him out because I saw the leach a short time later. He was looking for his body.
Step Two, arrogant SOB
This is a bow-user that thinks because he can kill everything with a few shots that he is the king if not god. Everyone else is just in his way. He expects all looting rights and demands everyone to bow down to his greatness. No one else is worthy because they were too stupid to pick Bow-user.
I ran into one like this the other day. I told Jocasta about him and he asked me if he had all green armor. I said yes and he had the name. It seem that the Archers are aware of these SOB's and get the same treatment.
Camping a Body
While running though the bottom of BDC I came across three bodies of Kartman. Two of the bodies had no armor. I gave him a quick tell but he was off line. God I hate it when they log. Jocasta ran by and asked about the bodies. I had told him Kartman was not on.
I checked the body that had armor on it and it was open. It had all his armor in it. I gathered it up and Jocasta said his bow was probably on one of the other bodies. We felt as the first body was open the other two would open soon.
The armor was very heavy and after picking it up I was at 110 burden. Jocasta said he would camp the bodies so some lamer would not get Kartman's stuff. After selling I logged to eat. When I got back Jocasta said the bodies were still not open and he was about out of arrows.
I had checked my mules and there was no room for the Kartman armor. Jocasta said he could mule the stuff. I ported to BDC and transferred the armor to Jocasta. I camped the two bodies for a while more. They still did not open. I figured now that Kartman had opened the first body before getting killed again.
Josasta then shared camping duties with me. Robyn of Lockxly also helped out. Finally the second body rotted and Josasta got that stuff. The third body never did open up. I tried it just before it rotted. Had to pick his stuff off the ground.
No bow on either body but some fair stuff. I gave what I found to Josasta and he mule it. The next day I saw Kartman in BDC. I saw why the armor was so heavy and no bow on the bodies. Kartman is pk. PK's tend to not have really expensive stuff on them.
Keys
I like the idea of keys to stop camping. But forcing the campers out searching for keys puts them in my way. BDC is packed, even more than before. Must be good players as I don't see and increase in bodies. Mostly when a bunch of new players go to BDC the bodies start piling up.
I found three keys quickly and picked up about 3 a day after that. A vassal gave me one so I have 12 in all. Got two choices now. Go to a chest and try my luck or trade the keys for something I need.
There is a small debate going on as to which is best. I think I lean to the trade. Never been lucky with chests.
Adding stats and leveling
Started the weekend needing about 2 million to level. I have been poring all points into Item and it is starting to work. Even had a 0 fizzle weapon charge. I still have 7 to 15 fizzles at times but many 3 fizzles are in there. My Item is at 234 now. It cost almost 800k for my next point. I'm about to reach my limit there. Still cannot get Heart Seeker VI. Defender VI has much less fizzles than Blood Drinker VI. Must be a degree of difficulty difference between spells.
I'm using this to advantage. I'm never sure when the spells will run out. As my HS V spell runs out some minutes before the VI spells I use that as a timer. Before I was recharging whenever my mana was full. Now I get a longer time between changes.
I saw a message from Harihk who had unarmed V gloves for trade. He made me a nice offer that I could well afford. So my unarmed skill is now at 319. I still miss Nobles a lot. The gloves are much higher lore so I have to buff before putting them on.
I decided to count my missed hits against a Noble. First count was 15 missed. With a 319 skill and Heart Seeker V that's a lot. I will keep counting to get an average.
Yesterday I ran into a Noble. Not camping them now at all. I run by the spots and if they are there, ok, if not I move on. This one was very hard to hit. There seems to be different ones. Some are much harder to fight than others. The next noble was even harder.
I saw the body of a player I knew. I asked him if he needed help. He said he had help from a mage he was teaming with. I later saw him in an upper step, naked. I helped defend him in a fight. We then saw a message saying the mage had died.
The jumping pit was a mass of orange dots. I jumped to a side passage and got to the lower level without jumping into the pit. I ran to the pit hallway and attracted a bit of the mob to chase me. Got a Noble and two Soldiers plus a few nymphs.
This was a really hard battle, much harder then it should have been. At this point I decided something was wrong.
I'm not sure if I had missed a buff or if the mana had run out but the new gloves were on my hands but not working. I quickly burnt a mana stone on it, rebuffed and put then back on. In hindsight I think I missed a buff. Not use to having to buff to put the gloves on.
After getting my gloves working I headed back to the pit. The few remain Olthoi were dispatched and they recovered their bodies.
I was at about 100k to level 53 when my lag returned. I had lagged out and disconnected twice that day. I was lucky enough to be in a safe place both times. I was selling and talking to another high level Killean member and I lagged out and disconnected again.
I really wanted to make 53 before I quit for the night. I have slowed down leveling because I spend a lot of time with my new players on Thistledown. So I took a chance and headed back to BDC.
Lag was bad but not unplayable. I tried to avoid fights with over 2 of them. If I lag out Fist will keep swing and kill one. The other will miss enough that I will live until I time out. Melee defense of 299 and defender VI is nice.
I never totally lagged out and in a short time I got the points needed. Sent a little more time to finish of the 700k + and got the last point of Item I wanted.
Only 6,500,000+ to my next level.
Being crazy again
I did one of my crazy things last night. When the pit is full of soldiers it is not sane to jump into it. My plan was to jump in and run to the tunnel, up the ramp and then fight them.
It worked but a few more than I planed for came with me. I was not getting hit but I was rapidly losing stam. This was before I found my unarmed V gloves were not working so they were not falling like they should. Fighting a Noble with a bunch of Soldiers pounding on you is hard.
Obo is a mage. I've seen him draining Soldiers a lot. Drainers get under my skin a bit, even though I have two of them myself. Not rational but it is part of my psyche. I think it is the idea of killing without risk, whatever it is something I need to get over.
Anyway Obo comes down the ramp and start draining and blasting one of the soldiers. What I liked was he did not go for the Noble like most would. I asked him if he had a stamina spell in there somewhere. Having met many that did not it was not a stupid question. Whoa nice, 100+ of stamina in one shot, good spell.
After I had rested I saw Obo waving his wand at the wall in the upper part of the ramp. Could only mean the other Noble had been lured down there and he was killing it. I waited until it was almost dead and put the final tap on it for him. I think monsters have a little extra resistance when they have just a little left. When draining lugies it seems that final little bit get resisted a lot more.
If you see Obo say hi, good player.
Newbies
Only 1 day of bad lag. Spent it draining and learning new spells. Got most of my III's and a few IV's. Until my mana conversion is better I will stick to III's mostly and only use IV's for buffing. Nice thing is what I learn for one applies for all. This means my Item spells up to V are all ready set for tapers. I just have to have the ability to use it.
Fist de Mage started with 100 self and 100 focus. Tank Mage started with less Focus to add endurance. Tank also has melee defense. This means that for pure spell use Fist de Mage is better.
I'm pushing Fist de Mage for now. I think Tank has better future as a team player. With melee he will not have to be defended as much. He will never be a "Stand in there and take it" fighter but will not have the defenders running all over trying to get stuff off his rear end. The ability to avoid a few shots gives the rest a chance to kill it.
It remains to be seen if this will work but for now Fist de Mage is a better mage. He also had Item, something Tank gets at level 26. As Fist is a better mage he is learning the spells. Tank will be able to apply what Fist learns.
Playing the mages and Cliff Bowman meant that Fist de Yuma (Jr.) was not moving up much. Decided to level him up at least 1. I find that my newbies die a lot more then Fist de Yuma (Sr.) did. This is because starting out I was not sure what I could fight and what I could not.
The new Fist knows he can kill a lot more stuff and will push the line more. This leads to more deaths. I remember when fighting a Voious Shreth (spelling) was hard at level 18. Of course he was still using his fists then, no weapons. The new Fist knows a few buffs. Using a Cold weapon, Unarmed I, Impregnability I and Item spells he can kill a Voious Shreth, but it will be close. But he is also less afraid of death then Fist (Sr.). Yesterday he was 2-1 against them at 10lv.
I got a message from Astrangeone, my patron about an alliance meeting. I took a few portals and arrived just before it started. On my way in I was giving an electrical unarmed weapon by Original (hope that is right) my monarch. This fills out my elemental weapon collection.
Meeting was to tell members about new changes in the game such as keys. It also was to arrange for quests for all levels and exchange items. I was given a pair of Unarmed II gloves. This makes Fist (Jr.) much stronger than Fist (Sr.) was at the same level.
One player was getting keys and hoped to find some bows for members. Cliff Bowman is second on the list for a 112 mod bow.
I really lucked out to get into such a fine alliance.
Using Fists
There was a question on the MS board on using Fists to fight instead of an unarmed weapon. The question was with Olthoi as Fists are a blunt weapon. I said the next time I found gauntlets I would give it a try.
If course you give up a lot of defense and attack power doing that. But I was sure I could fight short of a Noble. Got some fair gauntlets yesterday and tried it against a Worker and a Nymph. I was hitting 4 to 12 with critical's of 20 on the worker. That's not bad. So it is possible to use Fists against an Olthoi. Have to buff the gauntlets and try a Soldier someday.
